LEWISTON — With its performers dispersed throughout the Olin Arts Center at Bates College, New York City’s Metropolis Ensemble will present the innovative site-specific piece “Brownstone” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2.
Metropolis Ensemble is a chamber orchestra dedicated to classical music in its most contemporary forms. Presenting a new generation of outstanding composers and performers, the ensemble attracts diverse audiences by promoting an atmosphere of openness, discovery and excitement about new music.
The ensemble’s Bates program consist of three works: the world premiere of an as-yet untitled piece by Bates composer William Matthews, and two pieces by Jakub Ciupinski, “Brownstone” (2010) and “Glitch,” a 2014 work for theremin and solo violin.
Audience members will be free to wander, explore and create their own experience of the piece. “Brownstone” is structured around an electronic soundscape, derived from animal sounds from the BBC Nature Sound Effects Library, that will interact with the different instruments and the unique acoustics of each location.
VIP admission is $25, available at batestickets.com. Regular admission is free but tickets are required, available at bit.ly/oacbates.
Next, pianist Gerald Clayton and his band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. Admission is $15, also available at batestickets.com.
With three albums as leader, several studio projects as a sideman and countless performances, pianist and composer Clayton has established himself as a leading figure in the emerging generation of artists fluent in the diverse styles present in today’s jazz.
“I have listened to lots of different musical styles as long as I can remember,” said Clayton. “I prefer to ignore the boxes, the genre distinctions. I focus on creating honest musical expressions and collaborating with people whose ideas resonate with my own.”
The trio’s other members are drummer Justin Brown and bassist Joe Sanders.
The Olin Arts Center is at 75 Russell St. For more information, contact 207-786-6135 or olinarts@bates.edu.
