100 years ago, 1914
What will be the longest Maine National Guard rifle shoot ever held began on the state range on the Garfield road in Auburn, Monday. For the past few days teams have been hauling tentage and equipment to the range in anticipation of the 1914 encampment-shoot. Monday is given over to the tent settlement and to getting the equipment and assignments into line.

50 years ago, 1964
Burning trash at the Lewiston city dump on Saturday night brought some calls to the Auburn and Lewiston fire departments but the public was assured the situation was well under control. Even the fire watch tower at Streaked Mountain contacted the Lewiston Fire Department concerning the huge column of smoke which rose high into the air. George J. Maher, Lewiston Public Works Department director, said the burning of trash at the dump occurs two or three times a week. The combustible material in the waste is burned on the upper level of the dump and then the tin cans and other such items remaining are bulldozed over the edge to drop to the lower level.

25 years ago, 1989
Athletes will compete out of town, but students will forfeit academic trips while the School Department copes with a bus driver shortage, outdated routes and crowding. “It’s really a shame,” said Linda Burgess, transportation director. “I know the kids look forward to those trips, and so do the teachers. But I’m batting zero. The minute I get five steps ahead, I’m five steps back.” Burgess herself is behind the wheel, and has drafted qualified mechanics and maintenance workers as well. But they don’t make up for shortages and worker absences, whose causes range from injury to jury duty.
