1944 – 2014

TOGUS — David R. Shortill, 70, of Lewiston, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 18, after a long battle with cancer, at the Hospice Center at Togus VA Medical Center.

Dave was born in Lewiston on April 27, 1944, to Raymond E. and Helen (Kenney) Shortill. Dave was raised in Lewiston and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School, graduated from Lewiston High School in 1962, and went on to graduate from St. Michael’s College in Winooski, Vt., in 1966.

While in college and before entering the Navy, Dave worked at Benoit’s Men’s clothing store. Dave joined the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1967, and was called to active duty in 1968, serving in Vietnam aboard the USS Boston.

Dave was married on April 15, 1978, to Suzanne (Labrie) Shortill in Lewiston.

After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Dave returned to Lewiston and substitute taught in the Lewiston school system. He then went to work at Payne Insurance Agency, selling insurance until he joined the family business, Ray Shortill and Son.

Dave worked in the family business until 1998, when he took over the business and renamed it Shortill Office Supplies. He maintained the business until 2010, and then went to work for Spiller’s selling office supplies to his customers and many of Spiller’s customers, until his health prevented him from continuing.

Dave was very active in the community. He was a member of the Lewiston Board of Appeals for several years, worked on many Lewiston High School Class of 1962 reunion committees, was a former chairman of the Supervisory Board at Maine Family Federal Credit Union for over 10 years and was a current corporator at Mechanics Savings Bank for over 30 years. Dave was also a member of the Lewiston Elks Lodge, the American Legion, a life member of the DAV and was a former member of the VFW.

Dave enjoyed gardening, fishing, going to the ocean and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne; and a son, Nicholas Shortill and his significant other, Angelicque Linton, of Lewiston. Dave also has two grandchildren he thought the world of, Desirae Shortill of Lewiston and Dylan Shortill of Litchfield. He is also survived by his sister, Mary (Shortill) Gledhill, of Bourne, Mass.; and a brother-in-law, Gerard Labrie, of Auburn. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as several cousins.

Dave was predeceased by his parents and in-laws, Wilfrid and Priscilla (Godin) Labrie.

Dave’s passing has left a great void in the lives of those who survive him and we love and miss him terribly.
