LEWISTON — Candidates, volunteers and staff with the Maine Democratic Party, along with Democratic candidate for governor Mike Michaud, will be canvassing neighborhoods in Lewiston and Auburn Saturday afternoon.
Michaud, who currently represents Maine’s 2nd District in the U.S. House of Representatives, is running in a three-way race against incumbent Republican Gov. Paul LePage and independent Eliot Cutler.
Ben Grant, the Maine Democratic Party chairman, said the effort was part of a “day of action.” The door-knocking effort is expected to start at noon and end about 4 p.m.
“With less than 50 days until Election Day, the Maine Democratic Party is ramping up its door-to-door campaign,” Grant said in a prepared statement. “The choices are stark this year, and we know the best way to talk to voters is a one-on-one conversation.
“We’re excited by the enthusiasm in Lewiston to support our Democratic ticket, and we hope to build on that this weekend.”
Also joining in the door-to-door effort will be Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Shenna Bellows, the party’s candidate for the 2nd Congressional District, Emily Cain and a slate of local Democratic candidates running for the Maine Legislature.
Cain is in a three-way race for the open seat being vacated by Michaud. She faces Republican Bruce Poliquin, a former state treasurer, as well as Blaine Richardson, a former U.S. Navy officer who is running as an independent.
Bellows is challenging incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins.
While Democrats look to Lewiston and Auburn, Republicans were on the campaign trail in Western Maine.
On Friday, LePage visited the Franklin County town of Farmington, where he did a Main Street walk in the afternoon, meeting with business owners and residents.
