FARMINGTON — Police say a vehicle ran over the foot of a pedestrian in a crosswalk on High Street on Monday morning, causing the woman to fall backward and strike her head.

Shirly Lorette, 77, was crossing High Street at approximately 8 a.m. when a car driven by Valerie Soucie, 62, of Wilton ran over her foot, Farmington police Chief Jack Peck said.

Soucie was traveling north on High Street when a vehicle ahead of her stopped to make a right turn onto Maple Avenue. Soucie went around the vehicle and didn’t see Lorette who was in the cross walk at the intersection, he said.

Charges are pending for failure to yield to a pedestrian, Peck said. Officer Ryan Wagner is investigating the incident.

Lorette was treated at the scene by NorthStar ambulance personnel, but declined a ride to the hospital. She was taken by private vehicle to her own physician, he said.

Peck warns motorists to be more attentive to pedestrians in crosswalks, especially in light of Farmington Fair traffic this week, and also at crosswalks near the University of Maine at Farmington.
