AUBURN — The demolition of the old Dillingham & Son Funeral Home downtown will keep part of Spring Street closed Friday and Saturday, according to demolition crews.
Roland Chabot of Chabot Demolition in Auburn said the building should be down by Saturday, and crews will return Monday to begin hauling away the remains.
“It’s going to take us a while to get it all down, but we should be done with that part Saturday,” Chabot said.
Portland developer Ethan Boxer-Macomber of Anew Development plans to construct a 46,000-square-foot, four-story building with 39 apartments and retail, community space or office space on the first floor.
The L-shaped lot runs along the back of the Engine House building from Spring Street to Pleasant Street and back along Spring Street and the funeral home’s parking lot to the KeyBank ATM.
The funeral home buildings, on the northern end of the lot, are being removed, turning the space immediately behind the Engine House into a small, open-air plaza.
Richard Whiting, executive director of the Auburn Housing Authority, said Chabot’s crews spent part of the summer cleaning up the interior of the building.
“They had some hazardous material removed, mostly asbestos,” Whiting said. “That took awhile, and they had to have it done before they could move to the site.”
The finished project will be managed by the Auburn Housing Authority.
Spring Street Road closure, through Saturday Sept. 13.
