FARMINGTON — Two drivers face charges after police clocked them driving faster than 60 mph in a 30 mph zone in separate incidents on Lucy Knowles Road.

Todd D. Jones, 39, of Skowhegan was arrested Friday on charges of criminal speed, 30-plus mph over the speed limit, and endangering the welfare of a child after radar clocked him at 67 mph, according to Farmington police officer Derrick Doucette’s report.

Jones had a young child in the back seat when Doucette observed him traveling at a high rate of speed at approximately 1 p.m. Friday, Rachel Heseltine, Farmington Police Department secretary read from the report.

When Doucette saw him, he estimated the vehicle was traveling at 70 mph on Lucy Knowles Road near the intersection with Knowlton Corner Road, she said. Once the radar was activated, the car was clocked at 67 mph.

Jones told police he was trying to pass a truck in front of him.

Doucette saw the tractor-trailer also make the turn from Knowlton Corner Road onto Lucy Knowles Road. He saw Jones pull out to pass without a turn signal and accelerate, she said.

On Saturday, Doucette was back in the same area of the Lucy Knowles Road at approximately the same time when he clocked Brian Young, 30, of Wilton driving 64 mph in the 30-mph zone, she said.

By the time he caught up with Young, the vehicle was in Chesterville, she said.

Young told police his reason for traveling so fast was because his daughter was being harassed by some boy, Heseltine said.

Young was given a summons for exceeding the posted speed limit by 30 mph or more.

In August, police gave summons to 10 drivers during a four-hour speed enforcement detail held on Lucy Knowles Road. These included two who were driving 83 and 98 in a 50-mph zone. Another driver was given a summons for criminal speed after driving 63 in a 30-mph zone.

Maine Department of Transportation repaved Lucy Knowles Road in July.
