Walk to End Alzheimer’s is Saturday

LEWISTON — Hundreds of Lewiston/Auburn area residents will unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions at the Alzheimer’s Association’s Lakes and Mountains Area Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Simard-Payne Memorial Park. Check-in is at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 10.

Participants will be able to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical trial enrollment and support programs and services. Each walker will also join in a meaningful tribute ceremony to honor those affected by the disease.

Thomas College rep to visit schools

WATERVILLE — A representative from Thomas College will visit the following schools:

Lisbon High School in Lisbon Falls at 11:15 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15;

Edward Little High School in Auburn at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16; and

Lewiston High School at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16.

The representative will meet with students to discuss Thomas’ academic and sports programs, and its residential life opportunities.

Sept. 15 program on fairy gardens

MONMOUTH — On Monday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m., Kerri Day of Longfellow’s Greenhouses will speak on Making a Fairy Garden. The Monmouth Garden Club hosts the program on the lower level of Custom Hall. Sponsored by Cumstom Library. The public is invited.

Learn to make an ideal place for fairies to abide in your garden. From her passion for gardening, you’ll learn to make fairy houses and how to create an inviting space with miniatures. If you enjoy walks in the woods, fairies and gnomes, or the effects of a natural ecosystem, you will want to join the club for her talk on “how-to” make a Fairy House Garden.

Seniors plan fair, flea market

AUBURN — The First Auburn Senior Citizens will host a fall fair and flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Hasty Community Center in Pettengill Park.

Table rentals are $10.

Set-up will take place from noon to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10.

Donations from the general public for the white elephant table will be graciously accepted.

All proceeds will go to the First Auburn Senior Citizens Club.

Joy of the Pen applications

TOPSHAM — Topsham Public Library is accepting applications for its annual writing competition, “The Joy of the Pen.”

The competition is free to enter for year-round Maine residents, both amateur and professional. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction and teen.

Applications may be obtained at the library or can be downloaded from www.topshamlibrary.org. Electronic submission is being strongly encouraged this year. The deadline for submission of applications is Oct. 11.

A reception and reading will be held on Nov. 8 to announce the winners. “Joy of the Pen” is sponsored by The Cryer and the Friends of the Topsham Public Library, 25 Foreside Road.

Children’s Foundation offering grants

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Auburn Children’s Foundation is accepting grant requests for the 2014 fiscal year. The foundation annually awards grants to individuals and organizations whose programs directly benefit children in the Lewiston-Auburn community.

Some past grant recipients were ELHS Garden Buddies Program, the Androscoggin Land Trust’s summer kids program, Lewiston High School STEP program and Safe Voices shelter program.
