WATERFORD — Do you enjoy reading and talking to friends about the books you read? Are you looking for recommendations for great books you haven’t discovered on your own? If so, consider joining the Waterford Library Book Group. New participants are always welcome.
The group meets once a month on the fourth Wednesday at 10 a.m. for an hour and a half of friendly discussion.
The September selection is “Rebecca” by Daphne Du Maurier. This dark psychological tale of secrets and betrayal has been in print continuously since its publication in 1938, and for many discussion participants it will be an opportunity to revisit a loved classic.
In October the group will discuss “The Lowland” by Jhumpa Lahiri. The story of two very different brothers moves from the 1960s to the present, and from India to America and across generations. It was a National Book Award Finalist and shortlisted for the 2013 Man Booker Prize.
The choice for November is “Etched in Sand” by Regina Calcaterra, a successful lawyer, New York State official and activist. She tells the story of how she and her four siblings survived an abusive and painful childhood only to find themselves faced with the challenges of the foster-care system and intermittent homelessness in the shadows of Manhattan and the Hamptons.
Books for December through April will be selected in the fall. Book group participants are responsible for providing their own copies of the books. All book selections are available in paperback or on electronic readers. They are also available in many of the local libraries. Everyone is welcome.
