AARP chapter to meet Sept. 8

PARIS — The Oxford Hills Chapter of AARP will meet on Monday, Sept. 8, at the First Congregational Church on East Main Street. Lunch will be served at noon and will consist of summer salads, chicken, potato and more. The cost is $6.50 and reservations are required by calling Ruth at 744-9069 by Friday, Sept. 5.

The business meeting will begin at 12:45 with a reminder to continue support of the local Food Pantry. Members are also continuing the book/puzzle swap.

The program will be a presentation by Jim Douglas from the Community Volunteer Outreach of Healthy Oxford Hills.

Deering Memorial free breakfasts

PARIS — Deering Memorial United Methodist Church will host free community breakfasts from 8 to 9 a.m. each Sunday.

The menu changes weekly with some of the most popular items being baked stuffed French toast, homemade cinnamon rolls, egg casseroles, home fries and pancakes. There is always cereal, toast, coffee, juice and fruit.

Organizers welcome help or donations of breakfast supplies. A free-will offering is available for anyone wishing to donate toward the cost of the breakfast.

Scholarship Fund Bottle Drive

SUMNER — A Sumner Scholarship Fund Bottle Drive will take place Saturday, Sept. 6.

Volunteers will drive through Sumner between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to pick up redeemable bottles.

BikeMaine welcome party planned

NORWAY — A BikeMaine welcome party will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, from Bob Butters Park to Key Bank on Main Street.

Join the crowd to welcome 300 visitors as they make an overnight stop in Norway as part of a week-long bicycle tour. Help the riders to feel welcome and encourage them to come back and bring friends. Bicycle tourism can bring big economic impact.

Fish and Game plans falls shoots

PARIS — The Norway-Paris Fish and Game Association will hold annual fall shoots on Sept. 7, 14 and 21. The rain date is Sept. 28.

Plan to join in at the club range, at 744 Buckfield Road (Route 117), from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The club offers voice activated trap and running deer shoots for all ages.

There are prizes for each round and the overall winners in all categories will receive trophies at the Oct. 15 club meeting.

The winners of the 10-gun raffle will be drawn at the Sept. 21 shoot, rain or shine.

There will be some raffle tickets for sale at the shoots.

Heywood Club starts fall meetings

NORWAY — The Heywood Club will hold its first meeting of the fall at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at the clubhouse. A business meeting will be held to discuss and plan for the upcoming year as well as programs.

Cole will give a presentation of the services available from the SeniorsPlus agency. SeniorsPlus is the aging and disability resource center for Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties. There will be time for questions and answers.

PARIS — Dempsey Challenge team Matt’s Angels will hold the second annual Dempsey Challenge Benefit Ticket Auction on Friday Sept. 12, at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.

There will be many items, as well as a dollar table, a 50/50 drawing and a food booth with homemade treats.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and ticket drawing will begin at 7.

It will be a night of fun, winning and support of the Dempsey Center.

NML plans adult book discussion

NORWAY — Norway Memorial Library will hold an adult book discussion series with a theme of chilling tales.

We all know who they are, those creatures of the night. Dracula, Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll, right? Halloweens come and go with children dressed up like their favorite vampire or ghoulish creature. But have you read the original stories?

Discussions of three classics in gothic horror will take place at 6:30 p.m. on the following Thursdays: “Dracula” by Bram Stoker, Sept. 25; “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Robert Louis Stevenson, Oct. 16; and “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley, Nov. 6.
