OXFORD — Lower costs in waste management are being passed down to residents disposing of trash at the transfer station.
In a memo to selectmen, station manager Warren Bennett noted some charges from Maine Resource Recovery Association, the town’s trash collector, had been declined, a savings the town could pass down to residents.
Bennett hoped the reduced fees would help curb illegal dump sites.
Adopted unanimously by the Board of Selectmen, the new schedule of fees cuts tire disposal prices in half, down from $2 per car tire and $10 per truck tire to $1 for each car tire and $5 for each truck tire. Bulk tire loads will now be charged $90 per ton.
Other lowered fees include demolition debris for $75 per ton, which dropped from $155 per ton, and mattresses or box springs at $5 each, with an annual coupon for the disposal of a mattress.
The only increase in fees from MRRA is for bad wood, which went up by $10 to $75 per ton.
Even with lower fees at the transfer station, Bennett noted it’s possible people will continue to try to avoid paying for their waste.
“I feel that as long as we can slightly more than break even with our prices, the less trash and junk we will see on Yeaton Swamp Road and others in Oxford,” Bennett wrote.
