I am no longer proud to be called a citizen of Lewiston. Lewiston claims it is concerned with saving stray animals but I don’t think that’s true.

Recently, I captured a stray cat that had been hanging around my house for about a month and called animal control. I was told to hang onto the cat and take it to the animal shelter. I took it to the local shelter but it was closed because it was a Sunday. Someone was there, though, and told me to call the non-emergency police number, so I did.

I was told the police don’t pick up stray cats, only dogs, and the cat was mine to deal with. But I already have two cats and the stray was terrorizing my cats. I was not happy. What makes a stray dog any better than a stray cat?

After the conversation with police, I finally took the cat to the emergency shelter because it had injured itself trying to escape a crate.

The shelter told me it doesn’t take in strays and to hold it until the next day (Monday) and take it to the humane society. I couldn’t do that because of my two cats.

I had to let it go, even with its bloody nose and bloody paws.

That cat may die out there now.

Are animals saved every day except for the weekends?

Lewiston should have some kind of service to save animals 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
