Editor’s note: School starts soon, and how a student does in school depends a lot on his or her parents. We asked area teachers and administrators for the best tips on how parents can help students be successful in school. Their suggestions will run every day through Aug. 27.

Today’s tip from Montello Elementary School first-grade teacher Mary Jipson Perry: Get involved.

“As a busy parent of two school-age children myself, my advice is to be as connected to your child’s education as much as you possibly can,” Perry said. “Getting involved could be attending parent meetings, volunteering or communicating with your child’s teacher regularly.

“It sends a message to children that education is important,” Perry said. “If the parents are at school, if they come to open house or attend the PTO, children see their parents making time for their education.”

Since Perry works during the day, she makes a point of attending evening events at her childrens’ school.

“I look at the gamut of all things and offered and pick some that work for my schedule,” she said.”

Getting involved also helps parents better understand what school is like for their students.

“Parents can talk about things at home,” Perry said. “Parents have that connection which can open up a dialogue at home about what’s happening at school.”
