Editor’s note: School starts soon, and how a student does in school depends a lot on his or her parents. We asked area teachers and administrators for their best tips on how parents can help children have success in school. Their suggestions will run every day through Aug. 27.

Today’s tip: Start earlier bedtimes tonight.

Why? Most students stay up later and get up later in the summer. When school starts, they’ll have to get up earlier. Parents can help that be less of a rude awakening.

“It takes a while for children to adapt from one routine to another,” Lewiston School Superintendent Bill Webster said. “It’s important to start a week before school because it’s probably not going to happen in one night,” Webster said.

Depending on their age, children need between nine to 12 hours of sleep a night.

“Research suggests, and any teacher knows, students who come to school rested are more ready to learn. Students who come tired are likely not ready to learn,” he said.

Webster recommends making the earlier bedtime and point out that school is an exciting experience.

“Combine it with getting school supplies, a new pair of shoes. Put it together as a package, and help students participate in the coming excitement,” he said.
