Roger Lanoie, 51, of Shapleigh had pulled the van over into the breakdown lane on Route 111 at 8:30 a.m. to make a phone call when a tractor trailer coming up behind him swerved to avoid an oncoming car and struck the rear driver’s side of the van, Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a press release.

The 2003 Mack tractor trailer was driven by Edward Reilly, 49, of Rochester, N.H., who told police a passenger car had swerved into his lane.

The van didn’t have any prisoners on board at the time. The only passenger was another corrections officer, Brian Maddox, 56.

McCausland said Maddox and Lanoie were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

Police charged Reilly with failing to maintain control of his vehicle and Lanoie with operating after suspension.

His license had been suspended for failing to pay a fine for a seat belt violation, McCausland said.
