AUBURN — A downtown photographer hopes to help local shutterbugs turn their lenses on Auburn’s historic architecture and other views Thursday.

Kaitlin Crowell, owner of Kait Lavin Photography at Court Street Studios, joins Auburn Economic Development Specialist Alan Manoian on a guided tour of downtown Court Street and Main Street that offers information about architecture with a special consideration of history.

“On Court Street, people just go by at 25, 30 miles per hour,” Crowell said. “They never stop to look at it. I’ve always been interested in that, in architectural design, and all the little details that people miss. I like to draw attention to that with photography.”

The tour steps off at 5:30 p.m. Thursday from in front of Crowell’s studio at 154 Court St.

A second tour, this time focused on the New Auburn area, steps off at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 28 at Rolly’s Diner.

Manoian has made downtown walking tours a regular feature so far this summer. The tours combine architectural discussions and some history of the area.

Manoian said he stopped in Crowell’s studio soon after she opened this summer to welcome her.

“She asked if I’d heard of photo walks,” Manoian said. “I had, and I knew they do them in pretty dynamic, urban areas. And she said, ‘We should start them here.'”

Manoian will be on hand to talk about the history of the area and Crowell will offer photography tips. People taking the tour should be relatively familiar with their cameras.

“It won’t be a huge lesson on how to use your camera,” she said. “I see my role as kind of helping to pick out little details and talking about how to make it into an interesting composition.”

Any camera is welcome, she said.

“You can take great photos with an iPhone,” she said. “If all you have is a little point and shoot, you can still do great things with it.”
