RUMFORD — The town is offering an interest-free, monthly property tax payment plan called the Tax Club Program.

It lets residential property owners pay their real estate taxes over eight months, Tom Bourret, Rumford tax collector, said Friday.

“It’s just a budgeting tool,” he said. It’s not an incentive for paying taxes, he said. “It’s just a service, like people do with (heating) oil.”

Open enrollment started Aug. 1. By early Friday afternoon, there were 18 people participating.

Once an application is completed, the tax collector issues a payment book. The Tax Club divides a property owner’s tax bill evenly over eight months, from Oct. 15 to May 15.

“It’s something that I learned from other municipalities when I was in training at a workshop,” Bourret said. “It’s pretty common in municipalities. It’s also part of our tax software package here.”

The Tax Club was approved by Rumford voters at the annual business meeting June 2.

Those interested in the program can get an application online at www.rumfordmaine.net/tax.htm or in person at the Rumford Tax Office in the Municipal Building on Congress Street. The application must be received before Sept. 30.
