LEWISTON — After weeks of care and antibiotics, Blake, the cat who was neutered with a rubber band and abandoned in a vacant apartment, will go up for adoption Thursday.
The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society received the cream-colored, lynx-point cat from a Lewiston landlord two weeks ago. He’d been found in a vacant Blake Street apartment after the renters had moved out. He appeared to be injured.
The shelter’s veterinarian discovered that someone had tried to neuter the cat with a rubber band and the area was badly infected.
The cat — dubbed Blake after the street where he was found — underwent surgery and treatment at a hospital. He returned to the shelter days later for the rest of his recovery. He is now nearly healed and well enough to go to a new home.
Shelter workers believe he is about 3 years old and part Siamese.
The shelter has received hundreds of phone and Facebook inquires about Blake since his story appeared in the Sun Journal two weeks ago. Although his adoption will be first come, first served, prospective families must pass an application process.
The shelter opens at 11 a.m.
No one has been charged in Blake’s injury. Lewiston Animal Control Officer Wendell Strout continues to look for the person responsible.
