AUGUSTA (AP) — The state of Maine is nearing the close of the period when it accepts applications for its “any deer” permit lottery.
Applications are due to the state by 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 15. A random drawing is scheduled for Sept. 9.
The state is set to issue 37,185 of the “any deer” permits. The number is a decrease of 9,525 from last year. State officials scaled back this year’s deer hunt because of the toll the harsh winter took on the deer population.
Maine’s firearms hunting season for deer begins Nov. 3 and ends Nov. 29. Hunters who lack an “any deer” permit may only shoot antlered deer. Maine’s “resident only” deer hunting day is Saturday, Nov. 1.
