NORWAY — Police said a man and a woman were arrested Tuesday night while attempting to steal goods from three boats docked at White’s Marina on Lake Road.

Elizabeth M. Macut, 61 of Cottage St., Norway and Steven R. Piirainen, 52, of Hill Street in Paris were charged with felony theft and burglary.

Police Chief Robert Federico said the two were arrested while breaking into boats docked on Lake Pennesseewassee. The list of items stolen was still being compiled Wednesday morning, but are believed to be worth over $1,000. All of the goods were recovered, Federico said.

A passerby alerted police to a suspicious vehicle parked at the marina around 11:30 p.m. Piirainen and Macut were arrested by Norway officers with assistance from Oxford police and Oxford County Sheriff’s deputies.

While in police custody, officers found the keys to a truck owned by marina personnel on Piirainen, Federico said.

Piirainen has at least a dozen prior convictions in Maine, including theft and burglary charges.

As part of bail conditions set Wednesday morning, Piirainen and Macut are forbidden to possess illegal drugs and alcohol, and may not have contact with marina personnel.
