LIVERMORE FALLS — Superintendent Kenneth Healey told RSU 73 board members Thursday night that plans will begin to completely close the former Livermore Falls High School.

Earlier this summer, voters decided to spend more than $300,000 to keep it open for one year to give Spruce Mountain Adult Education Director Eileen Miazga a chance to find ways to keep it open and to develop a community room.

The adult education program is housed in a portion of the former high school.

Healey said the adult education program likely will move into the Central Office building.

Livermore representative Cynthia Young said she was disappointed the building may be closed.

“People voted and we were to set up a committee (to manage public use of the building). I feel the gym should be open,” she said.

Healey said the building will likely remain open for all or much of 2014-15, but space is available at the Central Office for the adult education program.

“If we close it, we will offer it to the town,” he said.

Space became available in the Central Office building because the pre-kindergarten program is being moved into the Jay Elementary School.

“The building’s educational purpose is done,” Healey said of the former LFHS.

Miazga said that her program will likely begin moving into its new quarters in September with a possible January due date to complete the move.

Healey said several Central Office relocations will take place.

He said the administration will gather comments about the complete closure of the former LFHS during the next few weeks or months.

He said using a significant portion of the Central Office building for adult education will demonstrate to taxpayers that the district is using the space.

In other matters, building principals listed the current staff openings, including the need for a second guidance counselor and Reading 180 teacher at SMHS; three soccer coaches at Spruce Mountain Middle School; and a special education teacher at Livermore Elementary School.
