MEXICO — The town’s longtime attorney, Geoff Hole, will step down from the position as of Sept. 30, Town Manager John Madigan told the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday.
Madigan said that although Hole plans to practice law part time by Sept. 30, he would be available any time the town needs him for advice.
“I know it’s important for the town of Mexico to have a particular response from a contact,” Hole said in a letter to the board. “The person you can turn to if you have questions on any new issues is Mary Costigan. If she’s not available as soon as you need her, we’ll make sure you find someone right away.”
Hole added that, beginning Aug. 1, he would bring Costigan “into all ongoing and new matters,” and that the town “would not be billed for more than one attorney.”
Madigan said Hole “is probably one of the expert municipal attorneys in the state” and “has always been a good resource.”
“We didn’t have to turn to him too often, thankfully, but he always had good advice whenever we did,” Madigan said.

* Selectmen unanimously voted to renew the liquor license of Tommy Gun’s Pit Stop on Roxbury Road.
Prior to approving the license renewal, Selectman Reggie Arsenault said he would vote to renew the license but wanted “to remind the owner that the bar’s deck is to be shut down at 9 p.m.
“Sometimes, I’ll go past Tommy Gun’s around 9:30 or 9:45, and people are still outside on the deck, hooting and hollering,” Arsenault said.
Selectman Byron Ouellette added, “We don’t want to stir up any problems, but the neighbors have to be respected, too.”
Arsenault said he wanted to know if there were any servers working at Tommy Gun’s who had completed a retail beverage training seminar, which is a state-approved program that helps bartenders and employees identify and prevent violations of specific liquor laws with an emphasis on underage and high-risk drinkers.
“Maybe next year, when they renew, we should ask for a list of people who have taken that class and see if they can take it, if they’re not certified,” Arsenault said.
* Selectmen approved a taxi cab license for resident Charles Proffitt, who operates under the moniker “EZ Taxi.”
* Before the meeting began, Chairman Richie Philbrick asked for a moment of silence for Ernie Robichaud, who passed away on July 5 following a brief illness.
Robichaud previously served as a Mexico selectman, Planning Board member and was longtime chairman of the Water District.
Philbrick asked for another moment of silence for residents Joseph and Marjorie Richard, who were seriously injured in a Brewer car accident on July 15, and Rumford residents Joseph and Ella Laplante, who were killed in the same crash.
