Ashley Parmele, 9, of Queens, N.Y., hugs her host mom, Joni Gordon of Oxford, after being dropped off at the Fireside Inn and Suites in Auburn on Wednesday. Parmele is one of 20 Fresh Air children from New York City who arrived in Maine to spend two weeks with volunteer host families. The Fresh Air Fund provides free summer experiences for NYC children from low-income communities. More children will arrive on Aug. 11 for a one-week stay with families that are hosting for the first time.
