RUMFORD — After a week of investigating, a cause has yet to be determined for the six rail cars that slipped off the tracks on the evening of July 11 on Route 108 in Rumford, said Cynthia Scarano, the Pan Am Railways vice president of human resources.

The trains, which are part of Pan Am Railways of North Billerica, Mass., derailed at about 6:15 p.m. near Smith Crossing on Route 108. No one was injured.

“Right now, we have our employees investigating each of the rail cars that derailed to see if there’s anything worth noting,” Scarano said. “As of today, we haven’t determined a cause.”

Scarano said that she will reach out to the workers at the end of the week to see if a final cause has been determined.

Scarano added that workers with the Springfield Terminal Railway are currently in Rumford to rebuild the broken section of railway.

DEP spokesperson Jessie Logan said July 14 that no hazardous materials were involved in the derailing.
