JACKMAN — Federal officials say a Canadian man is facing charges after he tried to illegally bring his wife across the border into Maine.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers say they became suspicious last week when they found women’s clothing in the vehicle of 41-year-old Pierre Poulin of St. Martin, Quebec, as he attempted to cross the border at Jackman. Border Patrol agents found his 27-year-old wife dressed in camouflage in the woods.

The episode unfolded on Thursday. Officials say Karoline Ramos De Oliveira, a citizen of Brazil, was deported a day later to Canada.

Poulin was being held by U.S. authorities. His lawyer, David Bate, said Poulin wanted to bring his wife with him to Florida but that she didn’t have documents to enter the U.S.
