WILTON — A Vermont biker escaped serious injury when he collided with a vehicle, was thrown onto the hood, smashed the windshield and fell onto the road at the intersection of Routes 2 and 4 and Route 156.
Zachary Basch, 22, of Jericho, Vt., was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital by a NorthStar ambulance, complaining of an ankle injury and minor cuts, Wilton police officer Derek Daley said.
Basch was biking east down Bass Hill toward Farmington at about 3 p.m., Daley said. He went to make a left-hand turn on to Route 156, also known as Depot Street, toward Rick’s Market, Daley said.
A 2005 Subaru Legacy driven by Dawn Field, 52, of Dallas Plantation was traveling west on Routes 2 and 4 and was going straight through the intersection.
She thought Basch saw her, Daley said.
He did not yield for the oncoming vehicle and crashed into the car. The impact threw him against the windshield and then on the road. The windshield smashed but the car’s airbags did not deploy, he said.
Field was not injured, but Basch’s bicycle was destroyed.
Basch was lucky, Daley said.
Members of Wilton Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene.
