PORTLAND — Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin say Mainers should elect someone who’s willing to work with other New England governors on regional issues.

Appearing alongside Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike Michaud, they took Republican Gov. Paul LePage to task Monday for missing last week’s meeting of New England governors and eastern Canadian premiers and for missing a regional summit on opiate addiction last month. Shumlin said Mainers need to elect a governor who can “get along.”

A LePage spokeswoman called the remarks “petty,” saying the governor was well represented by his energy director and economic development commissioner at the latest meeting.

Patrick and Shumlin were in Portland to raise money for Michaud’s campaign. Later, Patrick planned to join Michaud at another campaign event in Saco.

Also on Monday, Gov. Paul LePage and New Brunswick Premier David Alward have signed an agreement outlining greater collaboration between the state and provincial governments on economic issues.
