ST. ALBANS — Officials with the National Weather Service’s Gray office confirmed a tornado touched down in the Somerset County town during a storm Tuesday.

John Jensenius, a morning coordination meteorologist with the Gray office, said Thursday morning the twister was on the ground for about 2¾ miles, and the width of the twister was about a half-mile.

Jensenius said winds whipped between 80 to 90 mph, which he called a significant storm for Maine.

The tornado was on the ground for about 5½ minutes, according to Jensenius.

The storm rated EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, Jensenius said.

The storm caused about half a dozen trees to fall throughout town, Fire Chief Jason Emery said Wednesday.
