AUBURN — A plan to convert the city’s Ingersoll Arena from an unused hockey rink into an indoor grass arena will get a public hearing next month.

City officials and members of the Recreation and Special Events Advisory Board are inviting people and groups that might use an indoor field to the meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Hasty Community Center. The center is next to the arena, at 48 Pettengill Park Road.

Auburn began operating its new dual-surface facility, the Norway Savings Bank Ice Arena, last fall. Since then, the city has been considering ways to reuse Ingersoll Arena.

A multiuse field and indoor tennis or basketball courts are some of the potential reuses, according to the study performed by Cordjia Capital Projects Group for the city. The study is a business and marketing survey of the city’s Ingersoll Arena and groups that might be interested in using the building.

The Advisory Board is in favor of converting the facility to an indoor field.

The first part of the session will be for Auburn residents interested in using it for programming through the Auburn Recreation.

The Advisory Board wants to hear from groups that want to rent the facility. Those could include schools, colleges, adult leagues, youth leagues, lacrosse, field hockey, baseball, softball, soccer, running and senior citizen groups.
