PERU — Selectmen on Monday accepted a partial bid from Bruce Manzer Inc. to rebuild 1,000 feet of Gammon Road, contingent on Manzer providing a total price.

Road Commissioner Joe Roach said his department has done appreciable work to prepare the road for rebuilding, blasting ledge and improving drainage. Gravel and replacing driveway culverts are needed.

The road project, including work done by the town road crew, is expected to cost about $60,000.

Roach said the upcoming repaving of East Shore Road is expected to cost about $60,000 for 1,600 feet. He expects to complete the repaving in the next five years.

Selectmen made it clear that owners are responsible for installing the first approved culvert and the town is responsible for maintaining them. Should driveways have inadequate culverts, the owner will be required to furnish a new one that meets state specifications.

Roach also said town roads are ready for the heavy rain predicted this week. The road crew has repaired damage caused by recent heavy rains.

Town Clerk Vera Parent informed selectmen that tax bills have been sent to all property owners. She is developing a list of delinquent taxpayers.

Parent said the town expects to receive $35,025 from the state Local Road Assistance Program. The town uses these money for the bulk of the $40,000 annual payment on the outstanding road bond. The bond will be paid off in four more years.

Selectmen decided to relocate the Town Office dumpster to deter people from using it for domestic waste. Selectman Larry Snowman said he believed that much of the abuse was from weekend visitors who wanted to dump their trash before returning home.

Residents have complained about the entrance to the post office. The property is privately owned.

Roach said the town is responsible for maintaining good road drainage, which may include work on culverts in private driveways, but the property owner is responsible for maintaining the driveway surface.

Selectmen’s Secretary Angelia Barkhouse announced there will be a meeting of the Planning Board at 5 p.m. July 21 at the Town Office.
