DIXFIELD — The Dixfield Outdoor Market Committee has begun planning its annual sale Sunday, Aug. 17.

Deb Morang, a member of the committee, said the market began around 30 years ago, under the direction of resident Norine Clarke and her late husband, Ralph.

“Norine and Ralph turned things over to others a few years back, but Norine still helps us out as an adviser,” Morang said. “She’ll give us some advice on how to set things up, or remind us if we forgot something.”

The event is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, and will feature foods and craft vendors along Main Street.

“One of the new things we had last year was a kids area,” Morang said. “It went over very well, so we’re bringing it back again. This year, the Dirigo High School Class of 2015 is heading that up. They’ll have carnival-type games, and hopefully, if the companies that gave us money last year do so again, we’ll be able to rent a bounce house.”

Several local organizations will remain open Sunday to participate in the Outdoor Market, including the Dixfield Historical Society and the Dixfield Congregational Church, which is hosting its annual quilt show.

Morang, who heads up the quilt show, said it will be held Saturday and Sunday this year.

“We’ll be serving tea on Saturday, and on Sunday we’re hoping to have some desserts there,” Morang said.

The idea for the quilt show stemmed from the Ladies of the Lake quilting group from Rumford, she said.

A 5K road race, led by Gunner Bradbury, coach of Dirigo High School’s cross country team, will take place in the morning.

Morang said that the committee is looking for ice cream and lemonade vendors to set up a booth.
