BREWER — Two people are dead after a head-on collision Tuesday afternoon on Route 9 in Brewer, police said.

Brewer Public Safety Director Perry Antone confirmed that two people were killed, but did not disclose their identities pending notification of relatives.

“It’s very, very early in the investigation to be able to tell what happened,” Antone said.

A total of six people were involved in the accident, according to Antone, and the other four were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with serious injuries.

The collision occurred shortly after 1 p.m. just west of the Eagle’s Nest restaurant.

Antone did not disclose if the deceased were drivers or passengers, and he declined to say what types of vehicles were involved.

Route 9, also known as North Main Street, is expected to be closed for much of the afternoon Tuesday while authorities reconstruct the accident, Antone said. Traffic was being detoured at Parkway North.
