Railroad officials were on Route 108 in Rumford on Friday night after at least six cars slipped off the tracks near Smith Crossing. The train derailed at about 6:15 p.m. Two hours later, there was no word on what caused the cars to leave the tracks. Several people who witnessed the derailment speculated that washouts from last week’s rainstorm may have played a role. No one was hurt. By nightfall, efforts were underway to right the cars and an investigation had begun. — Mark LaFlamme
