SOUTH PORTLAND — Emergency crews evacuated residents and businesses along Main Street after a gas leak reported at 8:40 a.m. Friday.

Workers on a road crew struck a 4-inch gas vein at 606 Main St., near Gerry Avenue, according to South Portland Fire Lt. Robb Couture.

Main Street, which also is Route 1, was closed from Westbrook Street to Cash Corner, according to the Scarborough Fire Department Facebook page.
