MINOT — Selectmen on Monday authorized town Treasurer Holly Packard to pay the filing fees for upcoming property tax liens.
Selectman Eda Tripp estimated liens would be filed for approximately 100 properties, 36 of which are facing foreclosure come January. There is some likelihood that a few property owners will take steps in the next few days to avoid having a lien placed on their properties, she said.
As of the end of June the town is owed a little less than $136,000 in back taxes, she said.
She said the per-property filing charge is $19, which the town initially pays but which is added to the total owed on the property.
Also Monday, selectmen accepted Susan Walker’s full payment of all overdue taxes, with fees and interest, on behalf of Christina Walker for property at 399 Minot Ave.
Selectmen received three bids for the property and directed Town Administrator Arlan Saunders to shred them unopened.
Two weeks ago, the board received notice from Tom Verrill, the town’s longtime sealer of weights and measures, that he was retiring.
The board offered the position to David Gilpatric, but Saunders said Gilpatric is not interested.
Tripp said a local person has held the job since the town was founded and suggested Saunders notify state officials that the board was turning the position over to the state until it finds someone.
Highway Supervisor Scott Parker reported that the crew has finished ditching on Marston Hill Road in preparation for paving and will start on the tarred portion of Death Valley Road this week.
Parker also said it appeared the four-wheelers using the section of East Oxford Road were respecting the speed limit signs members of the Bog Hooters Tri-Town ATV Club put up recently and were not spinning wheels and making a mess of the road.
Selectmen also agreed to hold a public hearing Monday, July 14, on a request for a liquor license for DaVinci’s Eatery to cater three events at the Wedding Barn on Center Minot Hill Road at the junction with Shaw Hill Road.
