PARIS — The Oxford County Democrats will hold a caucus Sunday to fill the vacancy created by Terry Hayes’ withdrawal from the race for county commissioner in District 3.
The caucus will be held at 6 p.m. July 6 at the Democratic Office at 21 Market Square in Paris.
State Rep. Hayes, D-Buckfield, was unopposed in the June 10 primary election, but withdrew shortly afterward to take a job with gubernatorial candidate Eliot Culter.
According to Oxford County Democratic Chairwoman Cathy Newell, Hayes formally submitted a letter of intent to withdraw from the campaign almost immediately after the June 10 primary, however confirmation from the govenor’s office approving the withdrawal, expected on Monday, has not arrived.
Newell said Tuesday that at least one unidentified person has expressed their intent to seek approval from the caucus.
“It’s ironic timing, because we always have a hard time electing a Democrat to the county commissioner’s seat. Terry was a strong candidate, and we were looking forward to her running. She’s well known in that district,” Newell said.
Towns in District 3 include Oxford, Otisfield, Paris, Buckfield, Hebron, Hartford, Sumner, West Paris and Woodstock. Only registered Democrats from those towns can vote.
Anyone who wishes to participate in the caucus who is currently unregistered or enrolled in another party needs to visit their town office during the week of June 30.
For additional information, Newell can be reached at 875-2116.
