GRAY — On Saturday, June 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray, come to meet and greet the real Donn Fendler, famous for becoming lost as a youngster for nearly two weeks on Mt. Katahdin in July 1939, then writing the very popular book, “Lost on a Mountain in Maine.”
Donn joined the U.S. Navy in WWII as a Sea Bee, then graduated from Benedictine College. He returned to serve his country as an Infantry Airborne Officer in the Army, retiring after 30 years as a lieutenant colonel.
He now splits his time between Clarksville, Tenn., and Newport, Maine. Over the years, he has written countless letters answering questions about his experience on Mt. Katahdin. He still gives talks at schools, libraries, for scout troops and others about his survival experience on the mountain in 1939.
Donn will autograph his books, which will be available for purchase in the Nature Store; or bring your own copies.
Additionally, MDIFW Recreational Safety Instructors will be on hand to teach about safety and survival in the outdoors. See demonstrations of fire building/starting; survival shelter construction, map and compass and must-have equipment you should always carry with you.
