WYMAN TOWNSHIP — A South Carolina man became sick Tuesday afternoon while hiking the Appalachian Trail on Crocker Mountain and needed help, Maine Warden Justin Fowlie said Wednesday.

Warden Scott Stevens responded to the rescue call along with members of Franklin Search & Rescue and NorthStar EMS medics, who hiked the 5½ miles to where thru-hiker James Clayton Tilley, 25, from Columbia, S.C., was waiting, he said. He was heading south on the trail.

Firefighters from northern Franklin County also were called.

At about 3 p.m. a local woman who shuttles AT hikers received a call from a hiker, who said he was in physical distress, Fowlie said.

“He was vomiting and had cramps,” Fowlie said.

Once rescuers reached Tilley, medics gave him fluids and then walked him out to a waiting ambulance.

He was taken by a NorthStar ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.

He was treated at the hospital and discharged Wednesday morning, a FMH spokeswoman said.
