Martindale team prevails

Playing in the second group of the day, under perfect conditions at Belgrade Lakes Golf Club, the team from Martindale Country Club finished an impressive 12 under in the best two-of-four format to win the Maine State Golf Association’s Club Team Championship on Sunday.

Andrew Slattery led the way with six birdies en route to his low-round-of-the-day 69. He got help from four birdies by Brian Bilodeau, three birdies from Andrew Stonehouse and three birdies from reigning MSGA Junior Champion Will Kannegieser.

Finishing in a tie for second were the teams from Biddeford-Saco and Falmouth Country Club at 137. However, the BSCC team, made up of Brian Angis, Scott Dewitt, Ron Dery and Keith Patterson found out the hard way what happens when you sign an incorrect scorecard. Dewitt had actually birdied the 13th hole but signed for a par 3 rather than the two. Fortunately for the team, the Rules of Golf state that when you sign for a higher score, you keep the higher score; however, if they had signed for a lower score than actually made, they would have been disqualified.

The Falmouth team, consisting of Patrick Bucklin, Steve Lycette, Tom Ellsowth and Gary Manoogian will take first place net honors in a three-way tie.

MSGA scholarship fundraiser

The Maine State Golf Association is proud of our Scholarship Fund and what the organization has done to help Maine students since 1950. To date, we have provided more than 520 scholars who hail from all 16 Maine counties.

New recipients selected this year will receive $1,500 for the 2014-2015 academic year, renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study. The total number of scholars receiving our help this year will be 43, making our financial commitment nearly $65,000.

The only fundraiser that the MSGA holds to support the Scholarship Fund is the Charlie’s Maine Open Pro-Am, which will be held on Sunday, July 27 at 1 p.m. as a kickoff to the Charlie’s Maine Open at Augusta Country Club in Manchester.

To make this event a success, the organization are asking for help to fill the field and help our scholars. The sponsorship cost for a team of three amateurs and a professional is just $750. You can request a particular pro, or the MSGA will be happy to match a pro to your group.

Please take a moment to check out the Charlie’s Maine Open web site’s sponsorship opportunities at: http://www.maineopen.org/sponsors.html. Whatever you might be able to do to help fill this field will be much appreciated! You can also help us by spreading the word with others who might be interested.
