WATERVILLE (AP) — Waterville police have launched a crackdown on loud vehicle exhausts after getting several complaints in the past month.

Chief Joseph Massey said officers will be looking for all vehicles that violate the state law on excessive or unusual exhaust noise. The six complaints the department has received in the last month have all been about motorcycle noise.

He told the Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/TdxdIZ) that vehicles that are “ridiculously loud” will be targeted.

The law defines excessive or unusual noise as anything noticeably louder than similar vehicles in the same environment.

Dave Lefebvre, owner of The Starting Line motorcycle shop, says he agrees that excessively loud exhausts are obnoxious. But he said the law is too subjective and often comes down to a “judgment call.”
