PORTLAND — State officials say Maine’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for May was 5.7 percent.
The figure was unchanged from April and down from 6.7 percent a year ago. Officials say the number of unemployed declined 7,000 over the year to 40,600.
State officials say the share of the population that is employed was estimated at about 61.6 percent, 2.7 percentage points above the national average.
The national unemployment rate estimate held steady at 6.3 percent. New England’s unemployment rate averaged 5.9 percent, with a low of 3.3 percent in Vermont and high of 8.2 percent in Rhode Island.
State officials say Maine’s employment to population ratio has been above the national average for 80 consecutive months.
