NEW VINEYARD (AP) — Authorities say a bald eagle struck by a school bus in New Vineyard has been euthanized.

Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service said the eagle took off from a pond along Route 27 on Monday and flew into the path of the bus.

MacDonald said one of the eagle’s wings was “nearly amputated” by the impact.

Wardens brought the bird to Avian Haven, a wild bird rehabilitation center in Freedom.

Avian Haven co-founder Mark Payne told the Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1pfheo6 ) the bird was euthanized with the approval of state and federal officials because its extensive injuries made it impossible to live in the wild, and because it was an adult, it was unsuited to live in captivity.
