PURCHASE, N.Y. — Federal investigators have recovered a piece of the engine of a small plane that crashed and killed a member of the Rockefeller family in suburban New York.

Richard Rockefeller, the great-grandson of Standard Oil co-founder John D. Rockefeller, was killed in the crash on Friday.

The Piper Meridian single-engine turboprop plane went down shortly after takeoff from Westchester County Airport. It narrowly missed a house in Purchase, New York.

The plane has been taken to an undisclosed location and will be transferred to a storage facility in Delaware.

The National Transportation Safety Board told the Journal that a preliminary report was expected in seven to 10 days.

Rockefeller was heading home to Maine after visiting his father.
