PORTLAND — Motivational speaker, author, activist and former hockey star Travis Roy gave the keynote commencement address Saturday night at the Gray-New Gloucester High School graduation ceremony at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Ninety-three seniors received their diplomas and more than 60 scholarships were handed out.
SAD 15 Superintendent Bruce Beasley likened the diplomas to the years of challenges and struggles the students have overcome in their 13 years of education, as well as the accomplishments and achievements they have celebrated.
“These fibers tell a story; they tell your story!” he said. “Be proud of your diploma fibers because they are your sweat, your tears, and your determination.”
Salutatorian Casey Myhaver quoted Charles Dickens, saying, “The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again.”
Myhaver said: “I know his message will hold true. I have faith that our paths will cross again soon enough. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us.”
The Gray-New Gloucester High School band accompanied the graduates with “Pomp and Circumstance.” Molly Stansfield and Brandon Buck served as marshals.
Senior Singers performed “I will Remember You.”
