RUMFORD — Almost everything in the proposed $7.75 million municipal budget was approved at Tuesday’s polls by town meeting referendum voters.
Voters approved the proposed $36.2 million RSU 10 budget, 937-485.
The poll results are considered unofficial until Town Clerk Beth Bellegarde checks the figures, which she was doing Wednesday in the Town Office. She said she didn’t think the results would change much. The poll crew worked until 3 a.m. Wednesday counting ballots, she said.
The proposed General Assistance budget of $93,406 was defeated by a vote of 700-773. That will require Rumford selectmen and the Finance Committee to refigure that budget and try to get it approved at a special town meeting.
Attempts to raise and appropriate money for Holy Savior School also failed, but because those were initiated article requests, no money will be appropriated and no revote will occur per town law.
Article 25 sought to raise $2,500 for textbooks for the school for fiscal year 2014-15. That was defeated 710-762.
Article 26 sought to raise $1,500 for school testing. It was defeated 689-782.
Article 27 sought to raise $550 for health services for the school, but it was defeated 717-759.
There were three articles that were approved, but selectmen and the Finance Committee differed on recommendations for amounts to be raised and appropriated, requiring an additional vote for which option.
Article 33 sought to raise money for Rumford Senior Citizens. It was approved 1,012 to 420. Voters who approved it were asked to choose one recommendation. Selectmen recommended $6,400, which received 786 votes and was approved. The Finance Committee recommended raising no money, which got 83 votes.
Article 37 sought to raise money for Tri-County Mental Health. It was approved 869-602. Voters who approved it chose between the selectmen’s amount of $6,472, which got 268 votes, and the Finance Committee amount of $5,841, which was approved with 444 votes.
Article 39 sought to raise money for the Western Maine Veterans Advisory Committee. It was approved 1,064 to 335. People who voted yes had to choose between the selectmen amount of $175, which was approved with 844 votes, and the Finance Committee amount of no money, which got 24 votes.
