WILTON — A large commercial space used for storage since it was built in 2006 has a new owner and some new occupants.

Jon and Lois Bubier have purchased what is often called the Dexter building on Routes 2 and 4. Closing on the property was completed Friday, Bubier said. He has not yet decided what to name it, he said.

The 12,000-square-foot building was built by Kelly Dexter and sold to Hammond Lumber Co. in April as part of its purchase of Dexter Supply.

“We’re in the lumber business, not the rental business,” Al Feather, manager of the Farmington and East Wilton Hammond sites, said. “We’ll continue to do what we do best — providing building materials to the greater Franklin County community.”

Hammond has retained a quarter of the second floor.

Fastenal industrial supply store will move from the Mt. Blue Shopping Plaza in Farmington to set up shop in the rest of the second floor, Bubier said. The company wanted room to expand, he said.

Fastenal came to Farmington in 2011, the 16th branch of the national retail business in Maine. It offers just about anything in industrial supply, including tools, hardware, chemicals, electrical cords, cutting tools and more.

The lower floor is 6,000 square feet and could hold two, maybe three, light commercial units. The space is up for lease, Bubier said.

A new entrance will be built from the Hammond driveway, Bubier said. The parking lot will also be paved, he said.

To reach the building, people will turn in to Hammond’s and take an immediate left, Feather said. Parking spaces will be available.

The Bubiers, who own Ron’s Market and other commercial and residential rental units in Farmington, continue to explore opportunities, Jon said. The market has been a stepping stone to many other opportunities, he said.

“The new building is in good shape,” he said. “Dexter used it over the years for storage, but it was heated and kept well.”

Bubier added a wall between the Hammond and Fastenal operations. Similar work will have to be done to make rental units on the first floor, he said.

“It’s a great location, nice new neighbors with an easy access to Routes 2 and 4,” Bubier said. “I’m comfortable with the building and its potential.”
