POLAND — A referendum on the RSU 16 budget will be held Tuesday, June 10.
Polls will be open in the Mechanic Falls’ municipal building, Minot’s Town Office and Poland’s Town Hall from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The $20 million proposed spending plan was approved at the May 12 districtwide meeting. It is up for final action Tuesday.
While the proposed budget is about $677,000 more than that for the current year, an increase in the amount of state subsidy the district is expected to receive greatly reduces the impact on local property taxes.
According to estimates prepared by Superintendent Tina Meserve, the proposed budget would increase property taxes on a house in Mechanic Falls with an assessed value of $100,000 by $18.76 next year; in Minot, taxes on a house assessed for the same value would go up $18.03; and in Poland, property taxes on the house would increase by $18.93.
The referendum is a straight “yes” or “no” vote on the total amount and must be approved by a majority of voters across the district.
