RANGELEY — A Massachusetts teenager remains in critical condition at a Lewiston hospital but is putting up a fight for her life, police Chief Dennis Leahy said Thursday.

Janessa Gordon, 18, of Melrose, Mass., was a front-seat passenger in a car that went off Route 4 at the bottom of Dodge Pond Hill and rolled over Sunday night. She was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver, Marilenis Waldron, 17, of Saugus, Mass., was headed west and saw a car with a friend in it, tried to pass it and lost control at about 6:06 p.m., Leahy previously said. She was issued a summons on a felony charge of driving to endanger, he said.

Waldron and one of three passengers in the back seat were the only two wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, Leahy said.

The 2006 Mazda 3 was going about 90 miles an hour when it crashed, Leahy previously said reconstructionists told him.

Rangeley police went to Massachusetts on Wednesday to speak to some of the other teens in the car and who had been staying at a rented house in Rangeley the weekend of the crash. More than 20 teens were at the house on Deer Meadow Lane rented by an 18-year-old from Massachusetts for a graduation celebration, Leahy said.

Police also went to Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational School in Wakefield, where the teens went to school. The senior class, of which Gordon is a member, is graduating Friday.

Gordon’s sister, Giana Gordon, told friends through a tweet that she will be accepting her sister’s diploma for her.

On the way back home Wednesday, police stopped at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston to check on Gordon and spoke to her father, Leahy said. 

An online campaign is raising money to help the family stay in Maine while Gordon is at the hospital. An update on the page stated her mom reports Gordon may be able to be transported to Boston soon.

The accident remains under investigation, Leahy said.
