AUGUSTA — Maine’s first virtual school is getting more time to meet its enrollment requirement.

The Maine Charter School Commission on Tuesday approved extending the enrollment deadline for Maine Connection Academy from June 1 to July 15. The school needs to enroll 243 students before it can open next fall.

John Larouche, an attorney for the virtual academy, tells the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1kAv592 ) that it has received 127 commitments to date. He says the school is making swift progress toward opening next school year.

The extension may provide school districts losing funds because their students are moving to the virtual academy less time to adjust their budgets before the new school year.
