DIXFIELD — The review and study of the condition of RSU 10’s nine school buildings is about to take the next step.
Superintendent Craig King told the board Tuesday night that the Building and Grounds Committee has completed its four-month review. Now, an impartial architect will conduct the same visits.
“The Building and Grounds Committee has done a preliminary evaluation of every building with kids and a principal there,” he said. “They have a good idea of those in great shape and those that aren’t. The Mountain Valley High School roof situation has driven this issue home.”
The high school roof developed significant leaks that forced the relocation of classes, created significant damage in the auditorium and other places in the school and prompted the relocation of many school activities.
“An architect will come in and do the same visitations,” he said.
That firm, HKTA Architects of Portland, has made a preliminary visit. However, a more extensive review will likely not take place until after the end of the school year.
King said he expects to submit estimated costs for the architect’s work to the board during its June 9 meeting.
Building and Grounds director Kenny Robbins told the board that the past two weeks of rain has not only caused a few leaks in the auditorium, but has also prevented the roof sealing project from going forward.
MVHS Principal Matt Gilbert said he continues to make adjustments to the locations of school events. The final student assembly will be held in the gym, and graduation is scheduled for Hosmer Field, with the gym as a rain location. He said he’d make a decision on whether the graduation would be held inside or outside on the evening of June 4. Also, he said the spring concert, set for June 11, will take place on the sidewalk adjacent to the school.
“We keep on adjusting,” he said.
In other matters, King invited the nine teachers and one food service employee who are retiring at the end of the school year to a special thank-you reception at 5 p.m., June 9, at DHS.
Also, the board approved a Community Use of School Facilities policy that requires the presence of a nutrition employee whenever an organization uses the cafeteria, due to liability issues. The organization would be required to pay for that person’s presence.
